Refugee Family Much to our surprise, the refugee family Augustine United Church is helping to sponsor arrived late Wednesday evening, August 1. We were given just over 24 hours notice and some of our refugee steering committee were able to be at the airport, along with a couple of people from Welcome Place, to meet them. Tunsia, the oldest sister, said to us at the airport, We finally have peace, peace and freedom, where no one is fighting. We are going through multiple orientation meetings this week to sort out what Welcome Place and Augustine will each be doing. As we determine particular needs, we will be contacting those who have offered to help out. We are setting up a Refugee Fund, which we will use to honour special occasions and special needs that arise with the family. If you have a desire to support this project over and above your regular givings, a tax receipt can be issued. Please keep Tunsia, her two sons Guta (8 years old) and Marie (1 year old), Iftu and her son Firomsa (3 years old), Naema, Firi in your prayers as they begin a major life adjustment. If you have not given your name to Glynis and would like to be on the volunteer list, please e-mail her at glynisq@gmail.com. Augustzines and Song of Faith Booklets Copies of the July 2007 issue of the Augustzine are available at the back of the Sanctuary and on the Zines & Articles page of this website. Additional copies of the Song of Faith, a new statement of faith approved by the General Council of the United Church, that was featured in the July 15 service are also available at the back of the sanctuary. Calendar of Events Drumming Workshop Bruce Harding, a singer, song leader and multi-instrumentalist from BC, will help participants to connect to the soul and spirit of drumming in worship. The workshop will be held Sunday, October 19, 4:30–7:00 p.m. including supper. The cost is $30 and registration is limited. Sunday evening will be open to the public as we sing and drum together in worship beginning at 7:00 p.m. To register or for more info, please call the church office at 284-2250 |
